In an effort to modernise healthcare services, the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, is preparing to introduce an e-hospital system aimed at making patient registration and medical record management largely paperless. The initiative will reduce waiting times and ease the burden on both patients and medical staff.
Pilot Launch Followed by Full-Scale Implementation
Hospital officials said they will initially launch the system as a pilot project and later expand it to cover all outpatient (OPD) and inpatient departments (IPD). The decision follows the successful adoption of the e-office system at GMCH-32, which has already improved administrative efficiency.
E-Office Success Lays Foundation for Digital Healthcare
GMCH-32 Director-Principal Dr GP Thami said the e-hospital initiative would significantly change the way patients interact with hospital services. He noted that the e-office system has created a more organised, professional, and paper-free work environment, with only a few sections, such as accounts and purchases, still awaiting full integration.
End-to-End Digital Patient Journey
According to Dr Thami, the e-hospital platform will streamline administrative procedures and save considerable time for patients. Once fully operational, the hospital will handle the entire patient process—from registration to consultation and prescription digitally.
ABHA Integration to Centralise Medical Records
A major component of the system will be the integration of Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) IDs, which will act as a unified digital storehouse for patients’ medical histories. Patients registered with an ABHA ID will no longer need to carry physical OPD cards, medical files, or previous prescriptions. The system will offer menu-based registration and automatically make patient details and health records available.
Instant Access for Doctors and Patients
Doctors will be able to access complete medical histories instantly in both OPD and IPD settings. After the system issues a token number, the doctor’s screen displays all patient information even before the consultation begins. The system records prescriptions, diagnoses, and treatment plans digitally and links them to the ABHA ID, allowing patients to access their records anytime.
