In a major recognition for Indian medicine, President Droupadi Murmu honoured Dr Suresh Kumar Angurana with the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar–Vigyan Yuva–Swarup Bhatnagar Award at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
Dr Angurana is specialist and a researcher at PGI and it was his innovative, life-saving work in the field of paediatric critical care that earned him a nomination as one of the 15 young scientists in the country. He is presently an Additional Professor in the Division of Paediatric Critical Care (in the Department of Paediatrics) at the Advanced Paediatric Centre (APC) at the PGI.
Dr Angurana’s research centres on the gut microbiome, examining how the vast community of microorganisms in the digestive system can influence outcomes during medical emergencies in children. His studies provided strong evidence that administering targeted probiotics to critically ill children can offer protective benefits. The research demonstrated that these beneficial bacteria help prevent serious fungal infections and reduce excessive inflammation commonly seen in severe conditions such as sepsis.
In addition to his laboratory work, Dr Angurana played a crucial leadership role during the COVID-19 pandemic. He helped the medical community understand how the virus impacts children differently from adults, particularly in cases of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C), a rare but severe condition causing widespread inflammation. His contributions played an instrumental role in developing national treatment guidelines that medical professionals now widely follow across the country.
